Our Projects
The Cupburger Mutual Aid Fund exists to redistribute resources within our community, quickly, directly, and without strings, so the people we care about can get the support they deserve.
In addition to our grants, we are launching Cupburger Projects, to assist community members with larger fundraising needs.
We are offering folks who require significantly more than our current monthly giving capacity help with creating and meeting the goals of a crowdsourcing campaign through a partnership with the fund.
We would love to offer you assistance with the following:
- Navigating setting up a crowdsourcing campaign.
- Making monthly donations to your goal until it is met via agreed grant requests to the Open Collective platform.
- Promoting your campaign through our community of Twitch streamers.
Here’s how it works:
You create a GoFundMe page which describes your needs and the amount you hope to raise. Our admins are experienced with these platforms and will help you navigate this process if you’d like support, either via a call, discord chats or email.
Once your campaign goes live, Cupburger will make monthly donations to your campaign until your total is met. This will be done by asking you to submit grant requests for an agreed amount via our Open Collective page. We will do this with a percentage of the money that has not been claimed in that month through the general fund. We will distribute up to 50% of our available fund at the end of each month, divided amongst the projects we are supporting, up to a maximum of £500 per project per month. The amount Cupburger will contribute will fluctuate on a monthly basis, as the general fund does. Cupburger will ask you to submit grant requests in order to pay contributions directly to you and you can update your GoFundMes total accordingly by registering it as an ‘off platform donation’.
We will adjust !cupburger stream commands and provide information for streamers about our special project; your campaign! We’ll encourage people to donate directly to your campaign and we will provide the link every time we talk about it. We hope this way money will come to you directly in between Cupburgers monthly contributions until your agreed upon campaign goals are met.
Planning your campaign:
If you’re comfortable with the above process, here are things for you to give thought to before we get started.
Financial goal: You might be tempted to ‘aim low’ and ask for less than you really need, but consider this; the people donating will want to have the most positive impact possible in your life! We’re encouraging you to aim high, telling folks what you REALLY need might yield unexpected results.
Description: Words are helpful but can be hard for folks. A good idea is to condense what you need into: “I am x, an x person who describes myself as x, and I am seeking x to pay for x.” (an ‘elevator pitch’ as they call it). A more lengthy description could describe the history of your difficulties, the background on who you are including all the highly relatable cool things about you, what you need and the positive impact it would have on your life. You don’t owe people any explanation, however the more we can communicate the more we can raise, usually. Our admins can help you put together a one line pitch, as well as a 2-3 paragraph description for people seeking details.
Pictures and video: Never a requirement, but boy does the internet love them.
Final Notes from Cupburger:
The platform that powers Cupburger donations (OpenCollective) is great for mutual aid, but takes a bigger cut than other platforms like GoFundMe. It would also require a lot more administrative work from our team of volunteer admins to help you receive less money. For these reasons only we suggest using an alternative like GoFundMe.
“GoFundMe” is used here as shorthand for an off-platform crowdsourcing site, but applicants can always substitute another service like Ko-fi or FourthWall, if they have comfortability with another donation platform. Our Admins may not be familiar with other websites, but are always happy to assist in any way that they can (even if this means learning a new platform).
