Why does Cupburger Mutual Aid exist?

By OhNoDotJpeg.

Cupburger Mutual Aid emerged out of a silly joke in a Twitch stream, a community with shared values, and a deep desire to do something about how fucked up the world is.

We look around our community and see those we care about: disabled friends, working class friends, people of colour, trans friends, all suffering in a society that sells itself as fair, but is anything but fair for most people.

As institutions continue to fail us, as the world burns, as capitalism continues to gobble up resources, as big politics continually fails to deliver any actual change for people: we can see that the system will not save us. It resists any change to the status quo. It is working as intended. We need a new world, and the current system will not deliver it to us.

The system we live in now is just a tiny slice of humanity’s history, it is not the only option for how humans can live. It doesn’t have to be this way. However, if we want a different world, we need to build it ourselves. Cupburger Mutual Aid is our small way of trying to do that.

So we’re trying to make it happen. We want to raise funds and then distribute them to our community members in need as mutual aid. And need doesn’t have to mean dire circumstances; we would love to fund joy, creativity, art, connection too. One of the seeds of this community’s origin story was in music: for us art is vital to life.

This fund and our policies are documented evidence of us trying to make this new world, and trying not to replicate capitalist, racist, ableist ways of structuring an organisation. We’re learning as we go, and trying to work it out.

Welcome to Cupburger.
