We’d love your help with Cupburger!

It’s nearly Cupburger’s first birthday!

Cupburger literally wouldn’t exist without people in this community contributing their time, ideas and skills to make it happen. Now that Cuppy is nearly a year old, we’re putting the call out for more people to get involved in the core Cupburger organising group to help us keep Cupburger mutual aid running smoothly, so it can keep making a difference for all of us.

We know that volunteering for something new can be a bit daunting. We understand that self-doubt and self-rejection can often make you question whether or not you may have the experience or skills needed to make a difference and contribute. You absolutely do and you almost certainly will have something to add – whether it’s enthusiasm, ideas, skills, or heart.

Some of the work we do includes:

  • Projects: liaises with people who are raising funds via GoFundMe, helps them get setup and promotes the Projects (link to Projects page)
  • Fundraising: ideas and organising for bigger fundraising ideas and activities
  • We have a regular Book Club that anyone can join, discussion can be voice or text chat or you can just listen in and take in the vibes. You don’t have to buy the book – you can use your local library or book lending service.

We’d love more support with:

  • Skillshares – we’ve had several already and we’d love some more!
  • Protests – sharing information about upcoming protests, or organising to go to protests together
  • Campaigning e.g. sharing letter writing campaigns
  • Other ideas – we’re always open to fun ideas. They don’t need to be fundraising focused, or huge events. A key part of mutual aid is community building and having fun together and we’d love to do more of this.

We have meetings about every 3 months. From July 2026 we’ll be hosting these as open meetings, where anyone can sit in the ‘audience’ on Discord and listen in, and contribute via chat.

We know it can be tricky to imagine what being part of a mutual aid group is like, especially if you’ve not had any experience in this sort of thing. So we thought it would be helpful to share some of the current team’s experiences of being part of Cupburger, to give you a flavour of what the first year has been like for us.

What volunteering you do for Cupburger

  • I’m am a member of the streamer portion of the group and am looking to bring a cooking based skill/knowledge sharing workshop to the collective.

Something you’re really proud of

  • Being able to raise the reach of cupburger to an even wider community base within both The Pride Brigade and the Sea of Thieves community. Leading to even more people wanting to get involved or in need of support.

Something you’ve learnt

  • Mutual aid isn’t just about monetised support. Through skill sharing, workshops and networking we can still really help those in need!

What advice you’d give to someone who wants to help Cupburger but isn’t sure how.

  • Join the discord, keep up to date with what’s happening, you’re welcome to talk to us all about what ideas you might have! Spread the word, come join the events, workshops and streams. Sometimes even just championing other projects can have the biggest impact!

What volunteering do you do for Cupburger?

  • I guess my official role is an admin for Cupburger, I try to be present for all the different cool things going on though!

Something you’re really proud of

  • I’m proud of it all, it is such an extraordinary amount of achievement we collectively continue to smash. Personally though, I am particularly proud of how a recipient of cupburger support had expressed they’d found discussing the process with me. I was so fucking beaming that she had such a good and reassuring experience and was confident to get the support she needed.

Something you’ve learnt?

  • I have learnt how loads of us doing a little bit, whatever is in our capacity at the time, has such a force of power behind it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to help Cupburger but isn’t sure how?

  • I’d strongly say, just come along to things. You’re not sure yet… but that’s okay. I think being in spaces with us all will organically help you come up with ideas. Even just being there is a contribution, there’s such a sense of solidarity when we’re in the discord together, in calls, steams whatever it may be. Your presence is a helpful thing in itself.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to help Cupburger but isn’t sure how?

What volunteering you do for Cupburger

  • Discord admin, the socials and anything else I can help with.

Something you’re really proud of

  • There’s a lot but I guess that we’re doing it together.

Something you’ve learnt

  • Group projects can be fun!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to help Cupburger but isn’t sure how?

  • That’s the beauty of mutual aid, wanting to pitch in is perfect! I think book club is a great in for people, we try to source free and accessible versions of the text (you don’t even need to complete it), there’s no obligation to join the discussion so you can listen in or use the chat function. I love hearing everyone’s ideas and getting to know other members of the community. (We’re having a book club meeting 28th June 11:00 bst to choose our next book if you fancy coming along. The event is in discord)

What volunteering you do for Cupburger

  • I’ve mainly been involved in branding and design including refinement of the original logo made by Llama, t-shirt design and creation of the Cupburger digital advent calendar. I’ve also hosted two fundraisers on stream including a special Show Us Your Stuff stream and the launch of a Cupburger partnered GoFundMe!

Something you’re really proud of

  • I’m mostly proud of what we’ve achieved together as a group and the fact that so many of us have contributed our free time and energy to build something so wonderful. On an individual level I’ve loved seeing people wearing the Cuppy T-shirts and seeing the giant Cuppy built in Minecraft for the fundraising concert was a massive buzz.

Something you’ve learnt

  • So much. A big thing for me has been learning about mutual aid, what it is and what it’s not. I’ve admitted to being slightly skeptical at first but I’m a total convert.

What advice you’d give to someone who wants to help Cupburger but isn’t sure how

  • Jump in! Even if it’s listening in on a meeting or being in the discord. There is never any pressure or expectation to do anything. Just being around and helping to spread the word to others is enough.

What volunteering you do for Cupburger

  • General stuff really, contributing my thoughts, trying to promote the good work done by Cupburger and pals!

Something you’re really proud of

  • Can’t really take credit for it but probably just how much of a tangible difference Cupburger has made to so many people already.

Something you’ve learnt

  • Do not be scared to ask for help when you need it.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to help Cupburger but isn’t sure how?

  • Everyone’s perspective is valuable. Everyone’s experiences leads to different perspectives so the more people we have on board, the more experience we have and we have a bigger chance of reaching and supporting more people in our community.

We sincerely hope you’ll consider joining us in making a difference to Cupburger. If you are still unsure and want to discuss further, please pop a message in the Discord!
